Randolph P. Thummel
John & Rebecca Moores Professor of Chemistry
5020 SERC Building
University of Houston
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Randolph Thummel is the John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston. The main focus of his work centers on the design and synthesis of novel ligand systems and their corresponding metal complexes, concentrating primarily on ligands involving azaaromatic nuclei such as 2,2'-bipyridine, terpyridine, and 1,10-phenanthroline. These ligands are synthesized using a wide variety of techniques ranging from the Friedländer condensation to Stille and Suzuki couplings. We use steric, conformational, and electronic effects to modify the properties of these ligands and in this manner tune the properties of their corresponding metal complexes. Most of our work is aimed at the development of new photosensitizers for solar energy utilization or biomedical applications. In particular we are involved in the development of Ru(II) complexes for light-driven water oxidation. The excited state of a photosensitizer such as [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 can donate an electron to a sacrificial acceptor (Na2S2O8) and the resulting Ru(III) species then oxidizes a catalyst that in turn can oxidize water to produce O2. The chromophore and catalyst have been incorporated into the same molecule to provide a more efficient dyad assembly. Steric as well as electronic effects have been shown to play an important role. Similar systems are currently being developed for photocatalytic water reduction with the hope of ultimately creating an integrated system for artificial photosynthesis.
